Bill Burns

Episode #16

Bill Burns

Q: Tell us about you and your business?

A: With his roots well established in Southern Indiana, Bill Burns has always called Jeffersonville, home. In 4th grade, he started his first job selling golf balls on the Jeffersonville Elks golf course. Now, he is the owner of Southern Indiana’s largest RE/MAX office. Bill has been a REALTOR® since 2001, and Broker/Owner of RE/MAX FIRST since 2006.

Bill takes pride in calling Jeffersonville, home. Bill serves with many organizations because he recognizes how much this community has given to him personally. Giving back is one of his core values, especially to his hometown. Bill gets the most satisfaction from giving back to the community through various organizations, such as Greater Clark County Schools Educational Foundation, The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Center for Lay Ministries, and The Federal Reserve Bank-St. Louis Branch.

Most recently, Bill was elected as District 2 Councillor for the City of Jeffersonville. He has a heart for District 2 because he was raised here, and his children were as well. It is in this district where he lives, works, and plays.

Q: Tell us about your family?

A: Bill has been married to his wife, Angie, since 1993. They have two children, Sophia (24, married to Abraham) and Leo (18, University of Louisville). Bill and his family are active members of the Southeast Christian Church – Indiana campus. On the weekends, you might find Burns and his family enjoying downtown Jeffersonville at The RiverStage or a local restaurant.

Q: Tell us about your community?

A: Jeffersonville, Indiana is a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky. Jeffersonville has a small-town feel, but close to the big city.

Q: Tell us how you serve or give back in your community?

A: Giving back is part of my DNA. I have served on countless boards, but today I focus my energy as the 6th District Councilman for the City of Jeffersonville. As a councilman, I serve on 4 other boards/commissions in addition to my normal council duties.

We believe that giving back to the community that gives to us is paramount. We work with several local nonprofits such as the Center for Lay Ministries, Red Cross Blood Drives, WHAS Crusade for Children, and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. CMN Hospitals is also very dear to our heart. Not only do our agents give back, but we host a large event each year, Night at the Races. Our giving to CMN Hospitals for the last 5 years has allowed us to claim the number 2 or 3 spot in giving by a RE/MAX office in the State of Indiana.

Q: How did you come about selecting this cause?

A: It was obvious that when we saw what Children’s Miracle Network did we wanted to be part of giving to CMN Hospitals. What excites me is that every dollar we give stays in the state of Indiana as no administrative fees are taken from our donations. Plus, no child is turned away at a CMN Hospital on the basis of their ability to pay.

Q: What are some of the specific things you have done to support this cause?

A: We have done yard sales, raffles, cookouts, and split the pot. The event that everyone likes is, Night at the Races. We raised nearly $45,000 in one night for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Q: What has been the impact on the community, your team, and family?

A: Our closest Children’s Miracle Hospital is about 2 hours away. I personally know people that have used the services at our local Riley CMN Hospitals. The care that is provided there is second to none. Not to mention, Riley, is part of the Indiana University Medical Department where cutting edge research and treatments are happening.

Q: What are your plans going forward?

A: Continue to discover ways I can give back to the community that gives to me.

Q: How would you recommend agents or brokers get started if they want to make a difference?

A: There are 2 ways I would recommend to make a difference in the community. First of all, give back by serving on a nonprofit. Use your time and talent to help further their cause. Secondly, champion a cause and help fundraise to continue the efforts of this charitable cause.
